Introduction:
A crown is a man made cap type cover that is fitted over an original tooth. A crown is used after a root canal treatment or to return normal function to a damaged tooth. It actually becomes the new outer cover of the tooth.
If you need bridgework done crowns can be attached to the adjoining teeth to strengthen them for the needed support.
Crowns are often used in cosmetic dentistry and as a finish to implant surgery. They can be made of porcelain, metal or a composite.
Symptoms:
If you have had an extensive filling you may need a crown to replace the strength from the loss of too much of the natural tooth.
Diagnosis:
Your dentist will be able to assess the need for a crown during a typical examination.
Treatment:
During your first session your dentist will make a mold of the tooth to be used in the lab to recreate your natural tooth. Then your dentist will smooth out the surface of the tooth in preparation for the crown and protect it with a temporary cap.
When your permanent crown is ready the temporary one will be removed and your dentist will cement the new one into place.
If you follow recommendations for taking care of your newly installed crown it should serve you well for years to come.
