Endodontic Retreatment

Introduction:

You may need endodontic retreatment after an unsuccessful root canal that has resulted in an infection. A follow up treatment can let you avoid an extraction or surgery.

An initial treatment may have failed because of a particularly narrow or uniquely shaped root canal. Leakage may occur around the crown if the seal has come loose. A break in the tooth, or additional decay can also affect the need for retreatment.

Symptoms:

Symptoms can appear well after a root canal treatment. Let your dentist know if you notice any discoloration or increased sensitivity.

Diagnosis:

Your dentist will make a diagnosis after conducting a thorough exam. If he sees the need he will refer you to a specialist for endodontic retreatment.

Treatment:

An endodontist will proceed by cleaning out the canal in readiness for reĀfilling. He will then seal the tooth securely to prevent further infection. If the crown has been damaged it will be restored with a temporary filling until a new crown can be made.
