The Treatment For Periodontal Disease Will Depend On How It Has Advanced

Posted on 08.27.15 By Site Admin

Many people are affected with periodontal disease of some type. It can first present with swollen gums and if left untreated can result in more serious conditions and ultimately lead to loss of teeth. But that is the worst case scenario. If you see your dentist regularly, periodontal disease can be caught in its earliest stage when it can be controlled through non-invasive treatments.

Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease. It is caused by plaque buildup that can be efficiently removed by adopting a daily regimen of brushing and flossing. If the plaque has hardened into tartar a professional cleaning will be recommended.

Periodontitis is a little more serious. It is a more advanced stage of gingivitis in which the gums have receded. The spaces left between the teeth and gums produce pockets that are ripe for infection. Jawbone and tissue may begin to deteriorate at this point. Dental attention is needed to keep the disease from causing more damage.

No one is immune to gum disease, but there are certain things that make some of us more susceptible to it. Smoking is a major risk factor and can also retard the benefit of therapy. One of the manifestations of diabetes is the sensitivity to infection which can mean a greater risk for periodontal disease.

The best way to avoid the more advanced stages of gum disease is by practicing good oral health habits at home and scheduling routine professional dental check-ups. Contact the office of Southlands Dental @ 720-886-0606 to set up your appointment.
