TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Introduction:

The temporomandibular joints control the movements of your jaws. Tmj compromises your ability to move your jaw up, down or sideways, affecting your ability to chew your food or speak clearly.

Symptoms:

You may begin to experience headaches and you may feel pain when you open your mouth to yawn. Jaw muscles may start to ache and you may hear a “popping” sound when you move your jaw.

Diagnosis:

Your dentist will evaluate your ability to move your jaws. He will use a stethoscope to listen for any telltale sound coming from your jaws as you move them.

Treatment:

Your dentist will recommend medication to relieve your symptoms and a mouthguard to wear while you sleep. Relaxation exercises may also be helpful. Surgery may be indicated if all else fails.
