Even though it’s become a fashion statement for a lot of young people mouth piercing can be dangerous. The mouth is full of bacteria, some is beneficial but others can cause infection. A piercing site can become an opportunity for that infection to take hold.
Diseases of the blood are also a threat including HIV and hepatitis. Viruses can be transmitted from shared piercing tools or through an exchange of saliva.
Blood clots and bleeding are both risks. Swelling can be so severe that it can affect the ability to breathe.
The constant irritation from the jewelry itself can bring on problems with the gums and teeth and harm existing dental work.
Symptoms:
Danger signals can include swelling and red gums. If you experience any pain around a tooth that has been filled or crowned, contact your dentist.
Diagnosis:
Your dentist will ask you to remove your jewelry so that he can examine the piercing site for signs of infection and so that xrays will be clear.
Treatment:
Treatment will depend on the extent of infection or the seriousness of an injury. Antibiotics may be prescribed as well as mouth rinses and other medications. Some cases will require surgery. Hopefully your dentist will be able to restore any cracks in your teeth.
If you must have mouth piercings have them done professionally and be aware of the warning signs.
