Introduction:
It is natural for your baby to suck his thumb. Some theories say that the sucking motion relaxes the baby and others think it may bring a feeling of security. Children usually drop the habit by the time they are four years old.
Symptoms:
Excessive or prolonged thumb sucking or sucking on anything else for that matter, can have an effect on how a baby’s mouth develops. Jaw formation and bite patterns are of specific concern.
Diagnosis:
Your dentist will be able to spot the familiar signs of thumb sucking.
Treatment:
As soon as your child is old enough try talking him out of sucking on his thumb. Your dentist will be glad to back you up.
