Beyond The Basics

Posted on 05.12.17 By Site Admin

If you’re scheduled for a thorough dental exam with Dr. Kalra of Southlands Dental in Aurora you can expect just that. The doctor will do a hands on check of all your teeth and any existing dental work. This is to identify the signs of early tooth decay and to make sure that your fillings and crowns are holding up as well they should be.

Some indications of trouble are not so obvious to the naked eye. That is why Dr. Kalra will order a complete set of x-rays as a follow up procedure to the initial exam for her first-time patients. This fundamental set of radio-graphs will be used as a reference tool to monitor future developments.

Gum disease is an issue for many in the US adult population. Dr. Kalra and her assistant will measure the depth from the top of the gum tissue down to where the teeth attach. If any of these “pockets” are deeper that the norm it could indicate the presence of periodontitis. If the evidence is there Dr. Kalra may recommend a deep cleaning treatment to remove the bacteria that has been trapped beneath the gum-line.

Some dental treatments involve medications that could be hazardous if combined with certain other medical prescriptions. Dr. Kalra will need a medical history including the types of medications you are taking along with the dosage for each.

Be prepared for your dental exam. Arrive on time for your appointment and bring along any required documents or information that the office has requested. Call Southlands Dental @ 720-886-0606.

Is It Gum Disease, Or Something Else?

Posted on 05.5.17 By Site Admin

Bleeding gums is often a sign of gingivitis which is the earliest stage of gum disease, but there are other possibilities. A change in your home dental care routine for instance, could prompt temporary bleeding. Your hygienist may have asked if you’ve been flossing as often as you should and uh-oh, you haven’t so now you vow to do better. Your teeth and gums may be sensitive to the floss at first but they will become accustomed to it in short order and the long term results will be worth the initial discomfort.

Take stock of your toothbrush, particularly the bristles. If they are too hard they may be irritating your gum tissue. Switch to a soft bristle brush and ease up on your brushing technique.

Some medications thin the blood and make the user more susceptible to bleeding gums. Other prescriptions can cause dry mouth which can also over stimulate the gum tissue.

Denture wearers may be more susceptible. Dentures that tend to slip out of place can rub up against the gum tissue causing bleeding and swelling. If your dentures don’t fit as well as they should see your dentist for adjustments.

Genetics may play a role. If gum disease runs in your family you may be more vulnerable yourself. Don’t give into it though, gingivitis can be reversed with proper treatment.

The intra-oral camera has proven most effective in disclosing the early signs of gum disease. Make your appointment with Southlands Dental today, call 720-886-0606.

Adult Teeth Can Be More Sensitive To Decay

Posted on 04.21.17 By Site Admin

When you stop to think about it you should not be surprised to hear that adults are just as susceptible, if not more so, to cavities. All the years of wear and tear tend to take a toll on our teeth.

The gradual erosion of the enamel that protects the inner layers of our teeth is caused by the acids that are produced when oral bacteria mixes with the sugars and starches in the foods and drinks that we put into our mouths. Anyone who has continually paid little attention to their dietary habits may expect to face dental issues somewhere down the road. All those sugary sodas and those candy bars will catch up with us.

The more dental work we have done the higher the risk for adult tooth decay becomes. Dental fillings are ultimately vulnerable to damage. When a filling is weakened in some way it’s possible for bacteria to sneak in and lead to more decay.

The flow of saliva in our mouths helps us chew our food more thoroughly and make it easier to digest. Saliva also washes away leftover food particles that contain acid causing bacteria. Dry mouth is a common condition of some older folks who need to take certain prescription drugs. With the loss of saliva comes the risk for tooth decay.

Try To Pinpoint Your Symptoms

Posted on 04.14.17 By Site Admin

There are few types of minor pain that are as annoying and sometimes debilitating as a toothache. It can keep you from enjoying the foods and drinks you normally would relish and force you to significantly restrict your diet. Your predominant thought will be how to make the pain go away and the quicker, the better.

There are various symptoms related to the specific cause of your discomfort. If you can describe how and where it hurts or if you can pinpoint the time when the pain started or recall doing something that may have injured your tooth it can help your dentist to reach a diagnosis.

It will be helpful If you can break down your symptoms as to when they occur, what triggers the pain and if it is a sharp or dull sensation. If your discomfort is general and you feel like your entire mouth is aching your pain may be symptomatic of the involuntarily habit of grinding and clenching your teeth resulting in the condition known as bruxism.

A sharp shooting pain that occurs when you try to bite down usually indicates that the tooth has been damaged in some way or that tooth decay has reached through to the tooth’s nerve center.

With the use of the best in technology and dental equipment along with your input Dr. Kalra of Southlands Dental will be able to diagnosis your symptoms and begin a treatment plan asap. Call Southlands today @ 720-886-0606 in Aurora.

Confidence Is Key

Posted on 04.7.17 By Site Admin

The connection between patient and dentist has to be a positive one. The benefit of being part of a dental home is the trust and confidence that comes from the long term relationship.

Most people feel some pangs of anxiety at the thought of going to the dentist. It may be that they know something is wrong and they are afraid to hear that an extensive treatment is required, but even a typical six month checkup can cause some apprehension. If the patient knows for instance, that he has neglected to brush and floss as often as he should’ve he may be regretting it and feel uneasy about any repercussions that his dentist may find.

People don’t go to their dentist to be judged or chastised, they want and should expect consideration and compassion. Patients look for a dentist who is able to explain things in laymen’s terms and who will take the time to discuss the diagnosis and present treatment options so that everyone is clear about the prognosis and the expenses involved. Of course the dentist’s main concern is to find the most effective restoration procedure available for his patient. If doctor and patient can be on the same page all the better. A patient’s confidence in his dentist’s recommendations comes from having a history of positive experiences.

If you’re looking for the advantages that a dental home can provide consider the experience and individual attention that Southlands Dental Associates has to offer. Call today @ 720-886-0606 in Aurora.

What Brings You To The Dentist?

Posted on 03.31.17 By Site Admin

What’s causing that consistent and pesky bad breath that you’ve been experiencing? The culprit could be a number of things including a certain medication that you may be taking, an allergy or a gastrointestinal ailment. Gum disease and a history of poor oral health are commonly associated with chronic bad breath as well. Actually, other than the pain from tooth decay or injury, bad breath is what motivates a lot of people to see a dentist.

Spicy foods or strong beverages can produce temporary mouth odors but they can usually be handled by chewing on a mint or rinsing with a tangy mouthwash. Persistent bad breath on the other hand, is a more serious matter. Your dentist or oral hygienist will be able to suggest optional remedies. Regular professional cleanings will remove the bacteria that may be contributing to your halitosis. If you suffer from an advanced stage of gum disease a scraping and root planing treatment may be necessary.

There are changes that you can make at home as well. Adopt a regimen of good oral health habits that includes brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time and flossing -don’t skip the flossing! A toothbrush can’t reach in between your teeth nearly as well as a string of dental floss can.

Talk to a licensed hygienist at Southlands Dental to get more information and helpful tips on how to maintain the fresh breath that comes from having your teeth cleaned professionally. Call 720-886-0606 today.

Cosmetic Dentistry Has Advanced

The idiom “let your smile be your umbrella” is comparing the protection that an umbrella provides on a rainy day to the self confidence that a healthy smile can bring to your life. When you greet people with a warm handshake and a bright smile you can expect the same in return which will boost your self esteem even more. Where do you go to find your perfect smile? Head directly to your dentist’s office.

Almost any imperfection in your smile can be improved through the technology of cosmetic dentistry. With the use of lasers and the changes in the way some procedures are now done amazing results can be achieved in less time and with less reconstruction required.

Inlays and onlays have replaced traditional dental fillings in some cases. A porcelain inlay or onlay can provide the aesthetic effect that is needed for teeth in your “smile line.” An inlay or onlay may also be used to replace an older, less attractive filling material.

Air abrasion technology can take the place of the dental drill – in some cases. If the tooth has not been too deeply affected the decay can be sprayed off with a blast of compressed air. Once the particles of decay are broken up they are removed through a suction tube.

There is no reason to think that you’re stuck with the teeth that genetics or disease have left you with. Talk with Dr. Kalra of Southside Dental about your specific concerns. Call today @ 720-886-0606 in Aurora.

A Better Approach To Dental Health

Posted on 03.17.17 By Site Admin

Professionals normally advise patients that a proper regimen for dental maintenance includes having their teeth cleaned every six months. Some people however, are more susceptible to plaque buildup either because of poor oral health habits or an over exposure to the foods and drinks that are known contributors.

Dental patients are often prone to skip flossing their teeth. Some find it hard to maneuver the floss while others just don’t want to spend the time that it takes. If you can relate, talk to your dentist or hygienist about the easier, less time consuming ways to floss. Patients can also be confused about when to brush their teeth.

Brushing after eating is a no-brainer but so is brushing first thing in the morning, even before breakfast. This is because our body produces less saliva while we are asleep and saliva is what kills the plaque causing bacteria in our mouths. The excess plaque also contributes to that stale “morning breath” that we’ve all experienced.

Because bacteria flourishes on the sugar and starch that we put in our mouths patients are advised to cut back on the foods that encourage the growth of plaque. Your hygienist will be able to provide a detailed list of foods that are helpful in discouraging plaque buildup.

Don’t put it off! It’s important to see your dentist on a regular basis in order to prevent any serious issues. Put your dental health in the capable hands of Dr. Kalra and her staff at Southlands Dental. Call for your appointment @ 720-886-0606.

Go Ahead, Make That Appointment

If it’s been awhile since you’ve seen a dentist don’t wait any longer. Maybe you’ve moved recently and you haven’t had time to find a new dental home or time has gotten away from you and you’ve just realized how long it has been. Whatever the reason, now is the time to get back on track.

Dentists have seen it all so there’s no need to hesitate because of the state of your dental health. Your dentist is there to make you comfortable and provide the service that you need to achieve and maintain good oral health. If you are anxious about the appointment don’t hesitate to say so. Things have changed in the dental office. A warm blanket, a pillow or soothing music are some of the amenities that are available to make the patient experience more relaxing. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is still an option and now there are several types of oral sedation that you and your dentist can consider.

If you’re transferring from one dentist to another arrange for your dental records to be sent ahead. The dental chart contains detailed information about every treatment you have received and when each procedure was done. This data will provide your new dentist with an accurate account of your oral health history. X-rays are an important part of your dental records. Your new dentist will need them to use for future reference.

Southlands Dental has the latest technology at hand to provide patients with a thorough assessment of their oral health. Call 720-886-0606 today to make your appointment.

Complete Care Under One Roof

The dental concerns that most people experience over the various stages of a lifetime are most likely to lie within the three basic fields of preventive, restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

Preventive dentistry is concerned with trying to ward off an issue before it can arise. It includes everything from the fight against cavities to defending against tooth loss and involves the cooperative efforts of both professional and home care. A regimen of brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups and professional cleanings, is at the essence of preventive dentistry.

Restorative dentistry deals with treatments and therapies that work to revitalize a tooth that has been impaired. Among the many procedures associated with restoration are fillings, root canals and deep cleanings to manage periodontal disease.

Technological advances have helped to increase the demand for cosmetic dentistry procedures. People are becoming more aware of the many benefits that it can provide, tooth whitening being one of the most popular.

Some procedures that fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry can also be characterized as restorative. Porcelain veneers, implants and crowns are used to repair or replace damaged teeth as well as to give patients a new and improved smile.
